"I am fascinated by the fundamental need that we all have to make connections with one another. My work explores the complexity of the resulting relationships and the connections that we create.

My ‘Connections’ series aims to make tangible these relationships between individuals. Two sculptural forms interact and converse with each other, one being bone china, the other glass. Simple, solid glass forms convey the power of these relationships. Bone china forms convey the fragile and complex nature of these connections. The work intends to strip away the complexity to something simple in form and subtle in combination.

At the heart of my practice is a long held interest in the exploration of technique. I am very interested in the tacit knowledge that is acquired through the process of making. Technique and concept have equal importance in the development of my work and my ideas typically evolve and crystallise as I explore and refine my technique."

Each month the SGS Committee will select one of our members as our Featured Artist, based on recent or long-term achievements such as awards, exhibitions, press coverage or exciting events such as the opening of a new studio or other significant professional developments.

Once selected, the Featured Artist will be invited to submit a unique photograph for this spot on our homepage as well as a brief write-up of their work, motivations and plans for the future. Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the official website of the Scottish Glass Society, and artist-led, charitable organisation with a mission to promote the appreciation, understanding and development of contemporary Scottish Glass. Our membership includes some of the most innovative and skilled glass artists working to the highest professional standards in contemporary glass today as well as students, historians, curators, and interested organisations and individuals. We champion the work of Scotland-based artists, and our membership is drawn from artists who studied here, have Scottish connections, a keen interest in glass art associated with Scotland, or who simply want to be a part of the Society.

We encourage excellence and promote and raise the profile of our members’ work through our exhibitions, catalogues, and events as well as expand, engage and educate our public in Scotland and beyond. We actively foster new links with leading museums, galleries, glass festivals, and glass organisations and invite internationally recognised artists, curators, and glass experts to sit as jurors for our exhibitions.

2012, our 33rd year, will prove to be a very exciting year. Our annual exhibition, Cultural Exchange, will take place at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Caithness during their annual conference in September and will be juried by Mieke Groot, internationally respected artist and Artistic Director of North Lands.

You’ll find the brief for Cultural Exchange here. You don’t have to be a member of the Society to submit your proposal although you will need to be a member to exhibit. We invite all artists working with glass in Scotland and beyond to enter.
