Jonathan Ball

Currently completing the final year of his BA(Hons.) in glass at Edinburgh College of Art, Jonathan brings the forms and experiences of his life as an artist blacksmith to glass, incorporating cast, slumped and blown forms into a diverse portfolio. During his third year, Jonathan made a series of pieces revolving around the iconic image of the anvil, including the richly coloured core cast piece above, laden with iron oxide. Yet another piece in the series - a clear glass anvil with a highly polished working face - was exhibited and toured Ireland as part of the RDS National Craft Competition. Keep an eye out for more of Jonathan's work at this year's Glass Degree Show at Edinburgh College of Art.

Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the official website of the Scottish Glass Society, an artist-led, charitable organisation with a mission to promote the appreciation, understanding and development of contemporary Scottish Glass. Our membership includes some of the most innovative and skilled glass artists working to the highest professional standards in contemporary glass today as well as students, historians, curators, and interested organisations and individuals.

We champion the work of Scotland-based artists, and our membership is drawn from artists who studied here, have Scottish connections, a keen interest in glass art associated with Scotland, or who simply want to be a part of the Society.

We encourage excellence and promote and raise the profile of our members’ work through our exhibitions, catalogues, and events as well as expand, engage and educate our public in Scotland and beyond. We actively foster new links with leading museums, galleries, glass festivals, and glass organisations and invite internationally recognised artists, curators, and glass experts to sit as jurors for our exhibitions.

2012, our 33rd year, proved to be a very exciting year. Our annual exhibition, Cultural Exchange, took place at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Caithness during their annual conference in September and was juried by Mieke Groot, internationally respected artist and Artistic Director of North Lands.

We also hosted Glass Games during the conference as part of the national programme of Glass Games, part of the Cultural Olympiad.
